Overview
The Pizza Size Calculator compares pizzas by computing their area from diameter measurements, then evaluates cost-effectiveness (value per dollar). Find out whether one large pizza is truly bigger than two mediums, and which size offers the best deal — backed by actual math instead of guesswork.
Formula
Pizza area = pi x (diameter / 2)^2. Value per dollar = Area / Price. Example: 12-inch pizza area = pi x 6^2 = ~113 sq in. 16-inch pizza area = pi x 8^2 = ~201 sq in. The 16-inch is about 78% larger than the 12-inch.
How to Use
- 1Enter the diameter of each pizza you want to compare.
- 2Enter the price for each pizza.
- 3Click compare to see area, price per square inch, and value rankings.
- 4Add multiple sizes for a comprehensive comparison.
Tips
- ✔Pizza area scales with the square of the diameter — double the diameter means 4x the area.
- ✔An 18-inch large is about 2.25x the area of a 12-inch medium, but typically only 1.5-1.8x the price.
- ✔Consider crust thickness — thin crust vs. deep dish affects the actual topping surface area.
- ✔Some pizza chains measure diameter including the crust edge, so actual topping area may be smaller.
FAQ
Q. Are two medium pizzas bigger than one large?
Usually not. Two 12-inch mediums total about 226 sq in, while one 18-inch large is about 254 sq in. The large is typically both bigger and cheaper per square inch. This is because area grows with the square of diameter, not linearly.
Q. Does this calculator account for toppings?
This calculator compares value based on surface area. Topping quantity and quality should be considered separately. A pizza with premium toppings may offer better value despite a higher price per square inch.
Q. Why do pizza sizes seem misleadingly similar?
Human intuition is poor at judging area from diameter. A 16-inch pizza looks only slightly larger than a 12-inch, but has 78% more area. This is because we tend to think linearly (33% bigger diameter) rather than quadratically (78% more area).
