Overview

The Recipe Scaler automatically adjusts ingredient quantities from a recipe to match your desired serving size. Whether you need to scale a 2-serving recipe up to 6 servings or reduce a large batch recipe, it maintains accurate ratios for every ingredient. Works for all types of cooking including baking, soups, and sauces.

Formula

Adjusted amount = Original amount x (Target servings / Original servings). For example, scaling a 4-serving recipe to 6 servings: Scale factor = 6 / 4 = 1.5, multiply each ingredient by 1.5.

How to Use

  1. 1Enter the original number of servings for the recipe.
  2. 2Input each ingredient name and its quantity.
  3. 3Set your target number of servings.
  4. 4Click calculate to see the adjusted ingredient amounts.
  5. 5Convert units if needed (cups to grams, etc.).

Tips

  • For baking, precise measurement is critical when scaling. Use weight (grams) instead of volume (cups) whenever possible.
  • Seasonings like salt and spices should be scaled conservatively — add less than the calculated amount and adjust to taste.
  • Cooking time does not scale linearly with recipe size, so monitor doneness separately.
  • When scaling up, ensure your cookware is large enough to handle the increased volume.

FAQ

Q. Does doubling a recipe double the cooking time?

No. Cooking time does not increase proportionally with ingredient quantity. For oven dishes, add roughly 25-30% more time. For stovetop dishes, the time after reaching a boil remains similar. Always check internal temperature for accuracy.

Q. Can I simply scale baking recipes by ratio?

Small adjustments (1.5x to 2x) generally work fine. However, when scaling beyond 3x, reduce leavening agents (baking powder, yeast) slightly. If egg counts don't divide evenly, weigh them and measure by weight.

Q. How do I handle liquid-heavy recipes like soups?

Scale the liquid to about 80-90% of the calculated amount, since evaporation stays relatively constant regardless of batch size. Taste and adjust seasoning at the end.
