Overview

The Alcohol Dilution Calculator determines how much water you need to add to reduce an alcoholic beverage to your desired ABV (Alcohol By Volume). Use it to dilute high-proof spirits like whiskey, vodka, or moonshine, or to achieve precise concentrations for cocktail-making and homebrewing.

Formula

Water needed = Current volume x (Current ABV / Target ABV - 1). Using the dilution equation: C1 x V1 = C2 x V2. Example: 500ml of 40% whiskey diluted to 25% -> Water = 500 x (40/25 - 1) = 300ml, Final volume = 800ml.

How to Use

  1. 1Enter the current alcohol percentage (ABV %).
  2. 2Enter the current volume (ml).
  3. 3Enter the target alcohol percentage.
  4. 4Click calculate to see the required water amount and final volume.

Tips

  • Use filtered or distilled water for dilution to avoid off-flavors from tap water.
  • Add water to the spirit (not spirit to water) for a smoother process.
  • After diluting, stir well and let the mixture rest for a day for the flavors to integrate.
  • For high-proof spirits (above 60% ABV), add water gradually and in small amounts.

FAQ

Q. Does the volume add up exactly when mixing alcohol and water?

Not precisely. When alcohol and water mix, molecular interactions cause the total volume to shrink by about 3-4%. This is negligible for home use but is factored into commercial production. The ABV calculation remains accurate regardless.

Q. What proof system is used in the US vs. other countries?

US proof is simply double the ABV percentage (80 proof = 40% ABV). The UK historically used a different proof system but has largely adopted ABV. This calculator uses ABV, which is the international standard.

Q. Does dilution affect the flavor of spirits?

Yes. Adding a small amount of water can actually enhance flavor by releasing aroma compounds. However, over-diluting will flatten the taste. Many whiskey experts recommend adding water until the spirit opens up without losing character.
