Median Income Calculator

Check income ratio to median income and welfare policy eligibility by household size.

Overview

The Median Income Calculator determines what percentage of the standard median income your household's monthly income represents, helping you assess eligibility for various welfare programs. The standard median income is the income of the household at the exact midpoint when all households are ranked by income, announced annually by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Most welfare policies in Korea — including basic livelihood security, employment support, and scholarships — use median income ratios as eligibility criteria.

Formula

Income Ratio (%) = (Household Monthly Income ÷ Standard Median Income) × 100

2026 Standard Median Income (monthly):
• 1-person household: KRW 2,392,013
• 2-person household: KRW 3,932,658
• 3-person household: KRW 5,025,353
• 4-person household: KRW 6,097,773
• 5-person household: KRW 7,108,192
• 6-person household: KRW 8,064,805

Example: 4-person household with KRW 3M monthly income → 3M ÷ 6,097,773 × 100 ≈ 49.2% (below 50% of median income)

Tips

  • The standard median income is announced every August and takes effect the following January, generally increasing each year.
  • Different welfare programs have different threshold ratios: livelihood benefits at 32% or below, medical benefits at 40%, housing benefits at 48%, and education benefits at 50%.
  • As the number of household members increases, the standard median income amount rises, so the same income level yields a lower ratio and greater eligibility with more family members.
