Overview

The Child Fever Medicine Dose Calculator computes the recommended single dose and interval for acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen syrups based on a child's body weight. Fever reducers should be dosed by weight rather than age, and this tool shows both the active dose (mg) and the actual syrup volume (mL). Because concentrations vary by product, you can adjust the mg/mL from the label. This result is a reference only — always follow the product instructions and your doctor or pharmacist before administering.

Formula

Single dose (mg) = weight (kg) × dose per kg (mg/kg)
Syrup volume (mL) = dose (mg) ÷ concentration (mg/mL)

Acetaminophen: 10–15 mg/kg, every 4–6 h, max 75 mg/kg/day
Ibuprofen: 5–10 mg/kg, every 6–8 h, max 40 mg/kg/day

How to Use

  1. 1Enter the child's current weight (kg).
  2. 2Select the medicine (acetaminophen or ibuprofen).
  3. 3Enter the syrup concentration (mg/mL) from the product label.
  4. 4View the recommended dose (mg and mL), interval, and daily maximum.

Tips

  • Dose fever reducers by weight, not age, for accuracy.
  • Acetaminophen and ibuprofen can be alternated, but always keep each medicine's minimum interval.
  • Avoid ibuprofen if the child is severely dehydrated, vomiting, or under 6 months — consult a professional.
  • Never exceed the daily maximum; acetaminophen overdose in particular risks liver damage.

FAQ

Q. Can I dose by age instead of weight?

Age-based labels assume an average weight and are less precise. Since weight varies widely at the same age, dosing by weight (kg) is safer and more accurate.

Q. Can acetaminophen and ibuprofen be given together?

They have different active ingredients and can be alternated, but each medicine must keep its own minimum interval (acetaminophen 4–6 h, ibuprofen 6–8 h). Record what you gave and when.

Q. Why does the syrup volume (mL) differ by product?

Even with the same mg content, a different concentration (mg/mL) changes the mL given. For example, an acetaminophen 160mg/5mL product is 32mg/mL. Always check the concentration on your product's label.
