Overview

The Child Daily Calorie Needs Calculator estimates the daily energy requirement of children aged 1–18 using the Estimated Energy Requirement (EER) equations adopted by the 2020 Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans (KDRIs), which follow the IOM equations. EER is the average dietary energy intake predicted to maintain energy balance in a healthy child, including the extra energy deposited during normal growth. Unlike adult TDEE calculators, it uses growth-specific equations, making it a proper starting point for planning a child's diet.

Formula

Ages 1–2: EER = 89×weight(kg) − 100 + 20
Boys 3–8: EER = 88.5 − 61.9×age + PA×(26.7×weight + 903×height m) + 20
Girls 3–8: EER = 135.3 − 30.8×age + PA×(10.0×weight + 934×height m) + 20
Ages 9–18: same equations with +25 kcal for growth
PA (physical activity coefficient): boys 1.00/1.13/1.26/1.42, girls 1.00/1.16/1.31/1.56 (sedentary/low active/active/very active)
e.g., a 6-year-old boy, 21 kg, 115 cm, low active (PA 1.13) → about 1,544 kcal

How to Use

  1. 1Select the child's sex.
  2. 2Enter the age in years (1–18), weight in kg, and height in cm.
  3. 3Choose the activity level — 'low active' fits most children; choose 'active' for kids who play hard or exercise daily.
  4. 4Check the daily energy requirement (EER) and the comparison across activity levels.

Tips

  • For ages 1–2 the weight-based equation is used, so sex, height, and activity level do not affect the result.
  • EER is an average estimate — if your child is tracking well along their growth-chart percentile, a somewhat different actual intake is usually fine.
  • Do not put growing children on unsupervised calorie-restricted diets; consult a pediatrician or dietitian for weight management.
  • Recalculate periodically — energy needs rise quickly during puberty growth spurts.

FAQ

Q. What is the Estimated Energy Requirement (EER)?

EER is the average dietary energy intake predicted to maintain energy balance in a healthy individual at their current size and activity level. For children and adolescents it also includes the energy deposited during normal growth (+20 kcal for ages 3–8, +25 kcal for ages 9–18). The 2020 KDRIs adopt the IOM EER equations.

Q. How is this different from an adult TDEE calculator?

Adult TDEE calculators estimate basal metabolic rate (e.g., Mifflin-St Jeor) and multiply by an activity factor, assuming growth has finished. Children need additional energy for growth, so age- and sex-specific EER equations are required for accuracy. This calculator is intended for ages 1–18 only.

Q. How do I choose the activity level?

'Sedentary' means little movement beyond daily living; 'low active' fits a typical child who walks and plays lightly; 'active' fits children who play energetically or exercise regularly every day; 'very active' fits athlete-level daily training. If unsure, treat the range between 'low active' and 'active' as a reference band.

Q. My child eats less than the calculated calories — is that okay?

EER is a population average, and individual needs vary. The best practical check is the growth chart: if weight and height keep following the child's own percentile curve, intake is usually adequate. If the percentile keeps dropping or rising sharply, consult a pediatrician or dietitian.
