Overview
Almost all of the energy in an alcoholic drink comes from the ethanol itself. Ethanol carries 7 kcal per gram — more than carbohydrate or protein at 4 kcal and second only to fat at 9 kcal — while supplying essentially no nutrients, which is why it is called an empty calorie. This calculator converts volume and ABV into grams of pure alcohol, turns that into calories, and adds the calories from residual carbohydrate left in the drink. Pick a preset for soju, beer, makgeolli, wine or whisky, enter how many servings you had, and you also get the equivalent in bowls of rice and the walking time needed to burn it off.
Formula
Pure alcohol (g) = volume in mL × ABV% ÷ 100 × 0.789 (density of ethanol) | Alcohol calories = grams of alcohol × 7 | Carbohydrate calories = grams of carbohydrate × 4 | Total = alcohol calories + carbohydrate calories | Rice bowls = total ÷ 300 kcal | Walking burn (kcal/min) = MET 3.5 × 3.5 × body weight in kg ÷ 200 | Soju-glass equivalent = grams of alcohol ÷ 6.51 g (one 50 mL glass of 16.5% soju)
How to Use
- 1Choose sex; the heavy-drinking check uses the Korean KDCA thresholds of 7 soju glasses for men and 5 for women in one sitting.
- 2Enter body weight — it is used only to convert calories into walking minutes.
- 3Select each drink and the number of servings. Half servings can be entered as 0.5.
- 4Use 'add drink' to combine a mixed session such as soju plus beer.
- 5Pick 'custom' to type volume, ABV and carbohydrate straight from a product label.
- 6Read the total calories along with the alcohol/carbohydrate split, grams of pure alcohol, and the rice-bowl and walking equivalents.
Examples
One bottle of soju plus a 500 mL beer (70 kg man)
The classic Korean somaek pairing.
One 750 mL bottle of makgeolli at 6% ABV
Low ABV, but the residual sugars make it far from light.
Two whisky shots plus two glasses of red wine (55 kg woman)
Spirits and dry wine carry very little residual sugar.
Background
The 7 kcal per gram figure is the Atwater factor for ethanol, derived from its heat of combustion, and it is the value Codex Alimentarius and Korean food labelling rules both use when declaring energy. The 0.789 g/mL density of ethanol at 20°C is what converts alcohol by volume into mass. Korea has been expanding calorie labelling on alcoholic drinks since 2021, and the published figures — roughly 404 kcal for a 360 mL bottle of Chamisul soju and about 229 kcal for a 500 mL Cass beer — line up closely with alcohol calories plus residual carbohydrate calculated this way. The heavy-drinking thresholds (7 soju glasses for men, 5 for women, twice a week or more) come from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's national health survey definition, while the WHO defines one standard drink as 10 g of pure alcohol.
Tips
- ✔The liver metabolises alcohol first, so fat oxidation is pushed back and the food eaten alongside a drink is more readily stored.
- ✔Low ABV does not mean low calorie. Makgeolli and flavoured soju carry enough residual sugar to match soju bottle for bottle.
- ✔Spirits are almost pure alcohol calories, but sugary mixers such as cola or tonic must be added separately.
- ✔Bar food is not included here; a single fried chicken order can exceed 1,700 kcal on its own.
- ✔If the bottle shows a calorie figure, trust it — enter the label's volume, ABV and carbohydrate under 'custom' to compare.
- ✔When cutting weight, trimming drinks often beats trimming the same number of calories from food.
FAQ
Q. How many calories are in a bottle of soju?
A 360 mL bottle at 16.5% holds 46.9 g of pure alcohol, which is 328 kcal on its own; adding about 20 g of residual carbohydrate brings it to roughly 408 kcal, or about 1.4 bowls of rice. A 16% product lands near 398 kcal, and flavoured soju at around 12% ends up similar because of its extra sugar.
Q. Does lower ABV always mean fewer calories?
No. Calories depend on how much you drink and how much sugar is left in the drink as well as the strength. Beer at 4.5% still delivers 229 kcal per 500 mL, and makgeolli at 6% reaches about 399 kcal per 750 mL bottle — close to a full bottle of soju.
Q. What does 'empty calories' mean?
Alcohol supplies 7 kcal per gram but virtually no vitamins or minerals, so the energy arrives without nutrition. The body also treats ethanol as a toxin and clears it first, suppressing fat burning in the meantime, which is why regular drinking tends to add weight.
Q. Are snacks and bar food included?
No. This tool counts the drinks only. Food eaten while drinking often carries more calories than the alcohol itself, so add it separately with a food calorie calculator for the full picture.
