Overview
The TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) has a different structure and grading scale depending on the test type. TOPIK I consists of Listening and Reading only (100 points each, 200 total): scoring 80 or above earns Level 1, and 140 or above earns Level 2. TOPIK II consists of Listening, Writing, and Reading (100 points each, 300 total), with grades ranging from Level 3 (120+) to Level 6 (230+). Since there's no per-section minimum — only the total score determines the grade — this calculator takes your section scores and instantly shows your total, current grade, and how many points you need for the next grade.
Formula
TOPIK I: total = Listening + Reading (out of 200). 80–139 → Level 1, 140+ → Level 2, below 80 → no grade. TOPIK II: total = Listening + Writing + Reading (out of 300). 120–149 → Level 3, 150–189 → Level 4, 190–229 → Level 5, 230+ → Level 6, below 120 → no grade. No per-section minimum applies.
How to Use
- 1Select your test type (TOPIK I or TOPIK II).
- 2Enter the section scores from your score report — two sections for TOPIK I (Listening, Reading) or three for TOPIK II (Listening, Writing, Reading).
- 3The tool automatically compares your total against the grade thresholds and shows your current level.
- 4If you haven't reached the top grade, it shows how many points you need for the next level.

Background
TOPIK is administered by South Korea's National Institute for International Education (NIIED) under the Ministry of Education, and the test type itself is split by difficulty level. TOPIK I, aimed at beginner learners, covers only Listening and Reading, while TOPIK II, for intermediate to advanced learners, adds a Writing section to assess actual composition skills. As with HSK, NIIED's official scoring method uses no per-section minimum — the total score alone determines the grade. Many universities, scholarship programs, employers, and visa applications require a minimum TOPIK grade as a condition.
Tips
- ✔Since there's no per-section minimum, a weak section can be fully offset by stronger scores elsewhere — total score is what matters.
- ✔Required grades vary by purpose (university admission, scholarships, visas), so check your target institution's requirement in advance.
- ✔If you're close to a grade boundary in TOPIK II (e.g. near 150 points), even a small score improvement on your next attempt can raise your level.
- ✔Check both your submission deadline and the score's validity period, since many institutions only accept scores within a certain timeframe.
FAQ
Q. What's the difference between TOPIK I and TOPIK II?
TOPIK I targets beginner learners and covers only Listening and Reading (200 points total), awarding Levels 1–2. TOPIK II targets intermediate to advanced learners and covers Listening, Writing, and Reading (300 points total), awarding Levels 3–6.
Q. Does TOPIK have per-section minimums like HSK?
No. TOPIK has no per-section minimum score requirement — only the total score matters. A low score in one section can be fully offset by higher scores in the others, as long as the total meets the grade threshold.
Q. When is no grade awarded on TOPIK?
TOPIK I awards no grade if the total is below 80. TOPIK II awards no grade if the total is below 120.
Q. How long is a TOPIK score valid?
Generally two years from the announcement date, but acceptance policies vary by university, employer, or visa office, so it's safest to confirm the specific validity requirement with the institution you're submitting to.
