Overview

Calculate your GPA based on the Korean 4.5-scale grading system. Enter each course's credit hours and letter grade to get your cumulative and semester GPA instantly. Also supports the 4.3-scale used by some Korean universities. GPA is a critical metric in Korean university life, directly affecting scholarship eligibility, exchange student selection, graduate school admissions, and employment opportunities. This calculator computes weighted average GPA from course credits (1-3) and letter grades (A+ through F). It also provides separate major GPA and overall GPA calculations, making it easy to accurately report grades on job applications. The tool flexibly handles P/F course exclusion, retaken course adjustments, and summer/winter session inclusion in line with actual university regulations.

Formula

GPA = Sum(credit hours x grade points) / Sum(credit hours). Example: A+(4.5)x3 + B+(3.5)x3 = (13.5+10.5)/6 = 4.0

How to Use

  1. 1Enter each course name and its credit hours (typically 1-3).
  2. 2Select the letter grade received (A+, A0, B+, ... F).
  3. 3Choose the GPA scale (4.5 or 4.3).
  4. 4Click 'Calculate' to see your average GPA.

Examples

4-Course Semester GPA (4.5 Scale)

Calculate the average GPA for four courses taken in one semester.

Course1Major Required 3cr A+
Course2Major Elective 3cr B+
Course3General Ed 2cr A0
Course4General Ed 2cr B0
ResultGPA 3.75 / 4.5 (10 credits total)

Major GPA Calculation

Calculate GPA for major courses only, separated from general education.

Major13cr A+(4.5)
Major23cr A0(4.0)
Major33cr B+(3.5)
Major43cr A+(4.5)
ResultMajor GPA 4.125 / 4.5 (12 credits total)

Background

Korea's university grading system evolved from the American GPA system. When Seoul National University was established in 1946, the American-style credit system was introduced with a 5-tier A/B/C/D/F structure. Over time, +/0 subdivisions were added to create today's A+, A0, B+, B0 system. The maximum GPA scale varies by university: some institutions like Seoul National University use the American-style 4.3 scale, while most Korean universities use a 4.5 scale that assigns 4.5 to A+, providing greater grade differentiation. This 4.5-scale approach is uniquely Korean. Recent debates include expanding absolute grading, increasing P/F options, and addressing concerns about grade inflation.

Tips

  • Exclude Pass/Fail courses from the GPA calculation.
  • For retaken courses, only include the new grade and remove the old one.
  • Scholarship GPA requirements typically use the most recent semester only.
  • Calculate major GPA and overall GPA separately for job applications.

FAQ

Q. What is the difference between the 4.5 and 4.3 scales?

The 4.5 scale assigns A+ = 4.5, while the 4.3 scale assigns A+ = 4.3. Most Korean universities use the 4.5 scale, but some (e.g., Seoul National University) use 4.3.

Q. How does retaking a course affect my GPA?

At most Korean universities, the old grade is excluded and only the new grade counts toward your GPA. However, there may be limits on how many courses you can retake or the maximum grade you can receive.

Q. How do I convert my Korean GPA to the US 4.0 scale?

A common method is to multiply your Korean 4.5-scale GPA by (4.0 / 4.5). For example, 4.0/4.5 becomes approximately 3.56/4.0. Check with your university for their official conversion table.

Q. How do P/F courses affect GPA?

Passed (P) courses earn credit hours but are excluded from GPA calculation. Failed (F) courses in P/F mode also typically do not affect GPA average but impact total credits earned. Check your university's specific rules.

Q. How is scholarship GPA determined?

Most scholarships use the most recent semester's GPA, typically requiring 3.5-4.0 or above. Since many scholarships evaluate single-semester GPA rather than cumulative GPA, consistent performance each semester is important.

Q. Is there a minimum GPA required for graduation?

Many Korean universities set a minimum cumulative GPA for graduation (usually 2.0/4.5 or above). Some departments may have additional GPA requirements for major courses. Check with your department office.

Q. Are summer/winter session grades included in GPA?

Yes. Grades earned in summer and winter sessions are included in your cumulative GPA for that academic year. They are treated the same as regular semester grades.
