TOEFL iBT

Overview

Enter your four TOEFL iBT section scores (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing — each 0–30) and this tool adds them into the 120-point total, then shows the equivalent IELTS band from the official ETS comparison table and your CEFR level (C2/C1/B2/B1) based on ETS's published total-score cuts. The TOEFL total is a plain sum with no rounding, but study-abroad applicants constantly need to compare against IELTS requirements or CEFR-based admission criteria — this calculator applies the official ETS ranges directly.

Formula

Total = Reading + Listening + Speaking + Writing (each 0–30, total 0–120). IELTS equivalence (official ETS table): 118–120→9.0, 115–117→8.5, 110–114→8.0, 102–109→7.5, 94–101→7.0, 79–93→6.5, 60–78→6.0, 46–59→5.5, 35–45→5.0, 32–34→4.5. CEFR (ETS total-score cuts): C2 114+, C1 95+, B2 72+, B1 42+

How to Use

  1. 1Enter your Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing scores (0–30 each) from your score report or practice test.
  2. 2The 120-point total is summed automatically, along with your CEFR level.
  3. 3Check the equivalent IELTS band and which range of the official ETS table your total falls in.
  4. 4Use the points-to-next-CEFR-level readout to set your target score.

Examples

Total 93 — roughly IELTS 6.5

A test taker scores 24 in Reading, 23 in Listening, 22 in Speaking, and 24 in Writing.

Reading24
Listening23
Speaking22
Writing24
ResultThe total of 93 out of 120 falls in the 79–93 range of the ETS table — about IELTS 6.5, CEFR B2, just 2 points short of the C1 cut at 95.

Total 102 — IELTS 7.5 and C1

A test taker scores 27 in Reading, 26 in Listening, 23 in Speaking, and 26 in Writing.

Reading27
Listening26
Speaking23
Writing26
ResultThe total of 102 lands in the 102–109 band (IELTS 7.5) and clears the C1 cut of 95 — enough for the 100+ requirement common at competitive graduate schools.

Total 71 — one point below B2

A test taker scores 18 in Reading, 17 in Listening, 18 in Speaking, and 18 in Writing.

Reading18
Listening17
Speaking18
Writing18
ResultThe total of 71 maps to IELTS 6.0 (60–78 range) but sits at CEFR B1 — a single extra point in any section reaches the B2 cut of 72.

Background

TOEFL iBT is administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service) on a four-section, 0–30-per-section scale totalling 120. The IELTS comparison table comes from ETS's official linking study (Linking TOEFL iBT Scores to IELTS Scores), which directly compared examinees who took both tests, and the CEFR cut scores are likewise published by ETS against the Common European Framework of Reference. Since August 2019, score reports also include MyBest Scores — the combination of each section's highest score from all sittings within two years — which a growing number of institutions accept.

Tips

  • Because the total is a plain sum, one point in your weakest section is worth exactly one point of total — split your target across sections.
  • Competitive US graduate programs typically expect 90–100+, and top-tier schools often require 100 or above.
  • The IELTS conversion is a reference value — if an institution publishes both TOEFL and IELTS requirements, follow the published numbers rather than a conversion.
  • If your target school accepts MyBest Scores, your submittable total may be higher than any single sitting.

FAQ

Q. How is the TOEFL iBT total calculated — is it an average?

It is a sum, not an average. Each of the four sections is scored on a 0–30 scale, and the total (0–120) is simply the four section scores added together, with no rounding step like IELTS's overall band.

Q. How accurate is the IELTS conversion?

The table used here is the official ETS comparison, built from a linking study of examinees who took both tests. Individual results still vary because the two tests differ in format and construct, so treat the conversion as a planning reference, not a guarantee.

Q. How is the CEFR level determined?

From ETS's published total-score cuts: C2 at 114+, C1 at 95+, B2 at 72+, and B1 at 42+. ETS also publishes per-section CEFR cuts, and some institutions screen by section level rather than total.

Q. What are MyBest Scores?

MyBest Scores (superscores) combine your highest score for each section from all test dates within the last two years, and have appeared automatically on every TOEFL iBT score report since August 2019. Acceptance varies by institution, so check whether your target school evaluates a single sitting or MyBest.
