Overview
Korea's national technical qualifications, administered by the Human Resources Development Service of Korea (HRD Korea), apply different pass rules by grade. Only the Engineer (gisa) and Industrial Engineer (saneop-gisa) written exams use a double condition — at least 40 points in every subject AND a 60-point average across all subjects. Craftsman, Master Craftsman and Professional Engineer written papers, along with every practical exam, simply require 60 out of 100. Because Engineer written subjects hold 20 questions each, one question is worth 5 points and a single subject below 8 correct answers fails you outright no matter how high your average is. Enter the number of questions you got right and this calculator applies both rules at once and works out how many more answers you needed.
Formula
Engineer / Industrial Engineer written: subject score = correct ÷ 20 × 100 (= correct × 5). Pass = (every subject ≥ 40) AND (total ÷ subject count ≥ 60). Points still needed = max(Σ max(0, 40 − subject score), max(0, 60 × subject count − total)); questions needed = that figure ÷ 5, rounded up. Craftsman / Master Craftsman written: score = correct × (100 ÷ 60), pass at 60 points (36 correct). Professional Engineer written (short answer / essay) and oral interview, plus every grade's practical (hands-on) exam: 60 out of 100.
How to Use
- 1Pick your qualification grade (Engineer, Industrial Engineer, Craftsman, Master Craftsman or Professional Engineer) and the stage you are checking.
- 2For an Engineer or Industrial Engineer written exam, select how many subjects your discipline has — usually 4, but 3 to 6 depending on the trade.
- 3Enter the number of questions you answered correctly in each subject. Craftsman grades take a single count out of 60; Professional Engineer and practical stages take a score directly.
- 4The per-subject floor, the overall average and the verdict are calculated immediately.
- 5If you fall short, read the 'points needed' row — the larger of the floor gap and the average gap — along with its question equivalent, and use it as your target for the next sitting.
Examples
Engineer written, 4 subjects, 14·12·7·15 correct — exactly 60.0 average yet failed
Multiplying by 5 gives 70, 60, 35 and 75 points, totalling 240 for an average that lands precisely on the 60.0 pass line. The third subject is one question short of the 8 needed for 40 points.
Industrial Engineer written, 4 subjects, 13·11·12·12 correct — passed on the line
Scores of 65, 55, 60 and 60 clear the 40-point floor everywhere and total 240 points, hitting the 60.0 average exactly.
Engineer written, 5 subjects, 10·9·8·13·15 correct — floor cleared, average missed
Scores of 50, 45, 40, 65 and 75 keep every subject at or above 40, but the 275-point total falls 25 short of the 300 needed for a 60-point average.
Craftsman written, 35 correct — failed by one question
A single 60-question paper worth about 1.67 points per item. 35 correct converts to 58.3 points, one question below the 36 needed.
Background
Pass criteria for Korean national technical qualifications are set under the National Technical Qualifications Act and published grade by grade in HRD Korea's official examination standards on Q-Net (q-net.or.kr). Engineer and Industrial Engineer written papers consist of 20 multiple-choice questions per subject and demand both a 40-point subject minimum and a 60-point overall average, whereas Master Craftsman and Craftsman written papers bundle 60 questions into a single subject judged only against 60 out of 100 — which is why no floor rule exists there. Professional Engineer candidates sit a short-answer or essay written paper and an oral interview, each marked out of 100 with a 60-point line, while hands-on practical exams pass at 60 across every grade. The 2022 restructuring standardised Engineer and Industrial Engineer written papers at 20 questions per subject, raising each question to 5 points and making floor management more decisive than before.
Tips
- ✔With 20 questions per subject, the 40-point floor is exactly 8 correct answers. Treat 8 per subject as non-negotiable before chasing extra marks elsewhere.
- ✔For 4 subjects, a 60-point average means 240 total points, or 48 of the 80 questions. For 5 subjects it becomes 300 points, or 60 of 100.
- ✔Writing off one subject is the riskiest strategy here: a high average cannot rescue a subject that lands below 40.
- ✔Craftsman and Master Craftsman written papers are marked as one 60-question block, so 36 correct is precisely 60.0 points while 35 gives 58.3 and fails.
- ✔An Engineer or Industrial Engineer written pass stays valid for two years from the results date, exempting you from the written stage for practicals in that window.
- ✔CBT disciplines show your score the moment you finish, but paper-based sittings publish a provisional answer key first — if you are on the borderline, wait for the objection period to close before assuming the result.
FAQ
Q. Why did I fail with an average of exactly 60?
Engineer and Industrial Engineer written exams enforce the average and the per-subject floor together. Scores of 70, 60, 35 and 75 across four subjects total 240 for an average of exactly 60.0, but the third subject sits below 40 and triggers a floor failure. One more correct answer there (5 points) would have made it 40 and passed.
Q. How many questions must I get right to clear the floor?
Each subject has 20 questions worth 5 points, so 40 points equals 8 correct answers. You need at least 8 in every subject and, overall, 12 × the number of subjects to reach the 60-point average — for four subjects that is 8 per subject plus 48 in total.
Q. Does the Craftsman written exam have a per-subject floor?
No. Craftsman and Master Craftsman written papers are 60 multiple-choice questions marked as a single subject, passing at 60 out of 100. Each question is worth about 1.67 points, so 36 correct lands exactly on the line. The per-subject minimum applies only to Engineer and Industrial Engineer written exams.
Q. Do practical exams use different pass marks by grade?
No — every practical exam passes at 60 out of 100 regardless of grade. Professional Engineer candidates take an oral interview instead of a practical, also scored out of 100 with a 60-point line. Disciplines that combine a written-answer part with a hands-on part simply add both weightings into the same 100 points.
