Overview
The IELTS Band Score Calculator computes your overall band score from the four section bands — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — using the official rounding rules published by IDP and the British Council. The overall band is not a simple average: an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band and .75 rounds up to the next whole band, so two candidates with similar averages can end up with different overall scores. Check whether your section scores reach your target overall band before applying to universities or for immigration.

Tips
- ✔Because .25 and .75 always round up, raising just one section by 0.5 can lift your overall by 0.5 at certain score combinations — simulate different combinations to find the most efficient section to improve.
- ✔Listening and Reading are objectively marked from 40 questions, so they are usually the quickest sections to improve when you are 0.5 short overall.
- ✔Many universities require per-section minimums (e.g. no band below 6.0) in addition to the overall score — meeting the overall alone may not qualify you.
- ✔IELTS results are normally valid for two years; make sure your score will still be valid at the time of application.
FAQ
Q. Why is the overall band different from the simple average?
IELTS rounds the four-section average to the nearest half band, but averages ending in .25 round up to the next half band and those ending in .75 round up to the next whole band. So 6.25 becomes 6.5 and 6.75 becomes 7.0, while 6.125 rounds down to 6.0 — the overall can differ from the raw average by up to a quarter band.
Q. How are the section bands themselves determined?
Listening and Reading convert your raw score out of 40 questions into a band using official conversion tables, and half bands are possible. Writing and Speaking are assessed by examiners against the official band descriptors. This calculator takes your four section bands (actual or estimated) and computes the overall.
Q. Is the overall calculated differently for Academic and General Training?
No — the overall band rule (average, then official rounding) is identical for both. Only the Reading raw-score-to-band conversion tables differ: General Training requires more correct answers for the same band, so the Reading band itself may differ for the same raw score.
Q. What combinations give an overall 6.5?
Any combination whose four-section total is between 25.0 and 26.5 (average 6.25 to 6.625) produces an overall of 6.5. For example 6.5/6.5/6.0/6.0 totals 25.0 (average 6.25), which rounds up to 6.5 under the official rule.
