HSK 합격 기준 안내

HSK는 中国教育部中外语言交流合作中心(구 汉办)가 공표한 기준으로, 영역별 과락 없이 총점이 급수별 합격점(1~2급 200점 만점 중 120점, 3~6급 300점 만점 중 180점) 이상이면 합격입니다. 성적 유효기간은 시험일로부터 2년이며, 이후에는 대학·기관 제출용으로 인정되지 않으므로 만료 전 재응시가 필요합니다.

Overview

The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, Chinese Proficiency Test) has different test structures, maximum scores, and pass marks depending on the level. Levels 1–2 consist of only Listening and Reading (100 points each, 200 total) and require 120 or above to pass. Levels 3–6 add a Writing section (100 points each, 300 total) and require 180 or above to pass. Unlike JLPT, HSK has no per-section minimum — passing depends solely on the total score — so this calculator takes your section scores and instantly shows your total against the level's official pass mark, plus the margin or shortfall.

Formula

HSK 1–2: total = Listening + Reading (out of 200), pass if total ≥ 120. HSK 3–6: total = Listening + Reading + Writing (out of 300), pass if total ≥ 180. No per-section minimum applies.

How to Use

  1. 1Select your test level (1–6).
  2. 2Enter the section scores from your score report — two sections for levels 1–2 (Listening, Reading) or three for levels 3–6 (Listening, Reading, Writing).
  3. 3The tool automatically compares your total against the level's pass mark and shows the result.
  4. 4If you fail, it shows the points you're missing; if you pass, it shows your margin above the pass mark.

Examples

HSK 4 total of 180 — a pass right at the cutoff

HSK 2 total of 105 — a 15-point fail

An HSK 2 examinee scores 55 in Listening and 50 in Reading, for a total of 105.

Level2
Listening55
Reading50
ResultThe total of 105 falls 15 points short of the 120-point pass mark — a fail.

HSK 6 total of 255 — a comfortable pass

Background

HSK is an internationally recognized Chinese proficiency test administered by China's Center for Language Education and Cooperation (formerly Hanban), under the Ministry of Education. The test structure itself differs by level: levels 1–2 evaluate basic proficiency using only Listening and Reading, while level 3 and above add a Writing section to assess actual composition ability. Unlike JLPT and some other certified language tests, HSK's official scoring method has no per-section minimum — the pass decision is based purely on the total score. Score validity is two years from the test date; expired scores are not accepted for university admission or employer submission purposes.

Tips

  • ✔Because there's no per-section minimum, a weak section can be fully offset by stronger scores elsewhere — managing your total is what matters.
  • ✔A comfortable margin above the pass mark (e.g. 240+ on level 4) is a good signal you're ready for the next level.
  • ✔Universities and employers that require HSK often set a minimum level as an admission or graduation condition, so check your target institution's requirement in advance.
  • ✔If your score's two-year validity window is closing, schedule a re-take early.

FAQ

Q. Does HSK have per-section minimums like JLPT?

No. HSK has no per-section minimum score requirement — only the total score matters. A low score in one section can be fully offset by higher scores in the others, as long as the total meets the pass mark (120 for levels 1–2, 180 for levels 3–6).

Q. Why do levels 1–2 and 3–6 have different maximum scores?

Levels 1–2 assess basic proficiency using only Listening and Reading (200 points total), while level 3 and above add a Writing section to evaluate composition ability, bringing the total to 300 points across three sections.

Q. How long is an HSK score valid?

Two years from the test date. For official purposes like university admission or employer submission, your score must fall within this validity window, so plan a re-take if it's close to expiring.

Q. Why do the pass marks differ by level?

China's Center for Language Education and Cooperation sets each level's pass mark relative to its test structure. Levels 1–2 require 120 out of 200, and levels 3–6 require 180 out of 300 — both correspond to 60% of the maximum score.
