Overview
The CSAT Minimum Requirement Calculator checks whether your Korean CSAT section grades meet a university's early-admission minimum, usually stated as a 'sum of grades' across the best few sections. Set the number of sections counted, any required subject, the science/social-studies averaging rule, and the Korean History threshold, and it finds the most favourable valid combination for you.
Formula
Grade sum = sum of the k best (lowest-numbered) grades among the counted sections Pass condition: grade sum ≤ university threshold AND Korean History grade ≤ its threshold [Exploratory subject rules — university specific] • Best of two subjects • Average of two, rounded down (2 and 3 → 2) • Average of two, rounded up (2 and 3 → 3) • Both counted as separate sections
How to Use
- 1Enter your grades for Korean, Math, English, both exploratory subjects, and Korean History.
- 2Choose how the university treats the two exploratory subjects.
- 3Choose how many sections count and any mandatory subject.
- 4Enter the required grade sum and the Korean History threshold.
- 5See the best valid combination, the grade sum, and how far short you are.
Examples
Korean 2, Math 3, English 2, exploratory 2 and 3 — target 'best 3 sum ≤ 6'
University averages the two exploratory subjects and rounds down.
Same grades, but the university rounds the exploratory average up
A single rule change flips the outcome.
Korean 1, Math 1, English 2, exploratory 2 and 2 — target 'best 4 sum ≤ 5'
A demanding threshold typical of medical programmes.
Background
Korean universities attach a minimum CSAT requirement to many early-admission tracks, typically phrased as the sum of grades across the best two, three, or four sections among Korean, Math, English, and the exploratory subjects. Korean History is usually excluded from that sum and set as a separate threshold. Because a large share of applicants fail the minimum, effective competition ratios are much lower than the published ones. Averaging rules for the two exploratory subjects differ between universities — rounding down, rounding up, or counting only the better subject — so identical grades can pass at one university and fail at another.
Tips
- ✔Check the exploratory averaging rule first: rounding down versus up can decide the outcome.
- ✔Korean History rarely counts toward the sum, but skipping the section voids the whole CSAT result.
- ✔Many applicants fail the minimum, so tracks with one often have lower effective competition.
- ✔Some universities exclude English from the sum and set a separate English threshold instead.
FAQ
Q. How is the grade sum counted?
Take the required number of sections with the best (lowest-numbered) grades and add them. For 'best 3 sum ≤ 6', the three best grades among Korean, Math, English, and exploratory must total 6 or less.
Q. Is an exploratory average of 2.5 counted as 2 or 3?
It depends on the university: some round down, some round up, and some count only the better of the two subjects. Check the admissions guide.
Q. What happens if I miss the minimum?
It is a pass/fail gate — failing it means rejection regardless of school records or essay scores.
