Overview
Korea's Credit Bank System (학점은행제) awards a bachelor's or associate degree once you bank enough recognised credits, but it checks three requirements at once — total credits, major credits and general-education credits. Enter what you have already earned and this calculator reports the gap in each category separately, so you can see when a healthy total still hides a shortfall in general education. It also applies the statutory recognition caps of 42 credits per year and 24 per semester to estimate the minimum time left.
Formula
Gap in each category = max(0, requirement − earned). Credits still needed = max(total gap, major gap + general-education gap, 18-credit institutional gap) — credits taken to close the major and general-education gaps also count toward the total, so the largest of the three is what you actually still have to take. Minimum semesters = ceil(credits needed ÷ 24); minimum years = ceil(credits needed ÷ 42).
How to Use
- 1Pick the degree type: bachelor's needs 140 total credits (60 major, 30 general education), a two-year associate needs 80 (45 major, 15 general education) and a three-year associate needs 120 (54 major, 21 general education).
- 2Enter the major, general-education and free-elective credits shown on your credit recognition statement.
- 3Separately enter how many of those credits came from accredited courses or part-time university registration — at least 18 are required.
- 4Read the per-requirement table to see which category is short, then use the credits-needed figure and the minimum semester estimate to plan your enrolment.
Examples
Bachelor's track with 45 major, 21 general education, 18 electives
84 credits banked, 60.0% of the way there. The major is 15 short and general education 9, but the 56-credit total gap is larger and therefore governs.
Bachelor's track over the total but short on general education
78 major, 24 general education and 40 electives give 142 credits, yet general education is 6 short of 30. The total gap is zero, so only those 6 credits remain.
Two-year associate with 30 major, 12 general education, 6 electives
48 credits banked, 60.0% complete. Required gaps come to 18 credits, but the 32-credit total gap is larger and sets the answer.
Credit totals met but too few accredited credits
All three bachelor's thresholds are cleared, but only 10 credits came from accredited courses or part-time registration, leaving the 18-credit rule 8 short.
Background
The Credit Bank System operates under Korea's Act on Recognition of Credits, letting learning outside formal universities count toward a degree conferred by the Minister of Education or a university president, administered by the National Institute for Lifelong Education. The thresholds are 140 total credits (60 major, 30 general education) for a bachelor's, 80 (45, 15) for a two-year associate and 120 (54, 21) for a three-year associate, and in every case at least 18 of the credits must come from accredited courses or part-time university registration. Credit sources include accredited courses, coursework at recognised schools, part-time registration, professional qualifications and self-study degree examinations; because the 42-credit annual and 24-credit semester caps apply to those sources combined, dividing the remaining credits by 42 gives the realistic floor on how long a degree will take.
Tips
- ✔General education blocks more learners than the total does. The 30-credit bachelor's figure is a floor, not a cap, so anything beyond it still counts toward the 140 total.
- ✔Credits recognised from professional qualifications or self-study degree exams count toward the total but do not satisfy the 18-credit rule; only accredited courses and part-time registration do.
- ✔The academic year runs from 1 March to the end of February and is counted by course end date, so a course finishing in February falls into the previous year's 42-credit cap.
- ✔Meeting every credit total is not enough if your major's standard curriculum lists required courses you have not taken — check that list separately.
- ✔Two full 24-credit semesters would be 48 credits, but the 42-credit annual cap binds first, so base any timeline on 42 credits per year.
FAQ
Q. How many credits does a Credit Bank bachelor's degree take?
140 credits in total, including at least 60 in the major and at least 30 in general education, per the National Institute for Lifelong Education. The remaining 50 can be free electives or extra major and general-education courses. A 2024 deregulation package proposed cutting the bachelor's threshold to 130 and the associate threshold to 75, so confirm the figure in force at cb.or.kr when you apply.
Q. Why is my degree application rejected when my total is high enough?
The three requirements are judged independently. With 142 total credits but only 24 in general education, a bachelor's applicant is still 6 credits short. The 18-credit rule for accredited courses or part-time registration and the required courses in your major's standard curriculum are checked separately again.
Q. What is the yearly limit on recognised credits?
42 credits per year and 24 per semester. The year runs 1 March to the end of the following February; the first semester is 1 March to 31 August and the second 1 September to the end of February, all counted by the date a course ends. The cap applies to the combined total from schools, accredited courses and part-time registration.
Q. Should I follow the two-year or three-year associate requirement?
The three-year requirement applies only where the standard curriculum for your field is published as a three-year programme, mainly some health fields such as nursing and dental hygiene; everything else uses the two-year rule. The difference is large — 80 credits versus 120 — so check the published curriculum for your major first.
