Overview

Korea's Computer Proficiency Certificate (Computer Hwalyong Neungnyeok, or 'Comhwal') applies two completely different pass rules to its written and practical stages. The written exam requires at least 40 points in every subject AND an average of 60 or higher across all subjects, while the practical exam requires 70 points out of 100. For Level 1 the practical is split into Spreadsheet and Database papers that must each clear 70 independently, so a strong score on one paper cannot rescue a weak one. This calculator applies both the per-subject floor and the average rule at once and tells you exactly how many points you are short.

Formula

Written pass = (every subject score ≥ 40) AND (total ÷ subject count ≥ 60). Level 1 has 3 subjects (Computer General, Spreadsheet General, Database General); Level 2 has 2 (Computer General, Spreadsheet General). Points still needed = max(Σ max(0, 40 − subject score), max(0, 60 × subject count − total)). Practical pass = every subject score ≥ 70 — Spreadsheet Practice and Database Practice separately for Level 1, Spreadsheet Practice alone for Level 2.

How to Use

  1. 1Choose your level (1 or 2) and the stage you are checking (written or practical).
  2. 2Enter each subject score out of 100. Written subjects have 20 questions worth 5 points each, so multiply your correct answers by 5.
  3. 3Per-subject floor status, overall average and the pass verdict are calculated automatically.
  4. 4If you fall short, read the 'points needed' figure — the larger of the floor gap and the average gap — and set it as your target for the next sitting.

Examples

Level 1 written, 75 / 65 / 55 — pass

All three subjects clear the 40-point floor and the 195 total gives a 65.0 average, satisfying both rules.

Level & stageLevel 1 written
Computer General75
Spreadsheet General65
Database General55
ResultTotal 195 · average 65.0 · no floor failure → pass (5.0 points of margin, 39 of 60 questions correct)

Level 1 written, 85 / 70 / 35 — floor failure

The 63.3 average clears the average rule, but Database General falls below 40 and triggers a floor failure.

Level & stageLevel 1 written
Computer General85
Spreadsheet General70
Database General35
ResultTotal 190 · average 63.3 · Database General below floor → fail, 5 points needed (floor gap 5 > average gap 0)

Level 2 written, 55 / 50 — average shortfall

Neither subject is below 40, but the 105 total is 15 points short of the 120 required for a 60 average.

Level & stageLevel 2 written
Computer General55
Spreadsheet General50
ResultTotal 105 · average 52.5 · no floor failure → fail, 15 points needed

Level 1 practical, Excel 95 / Access 65 — fail

The average is 80, but Database Practice misses the 70-point bar by 5 points, so the per-paper rule is not met.

Background

The Computer Proficiency Certificate is a Korean national technical qualification administered by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, testing practical command of Microsoft Excel and Access. Its written rule — a 40-point floor per subject with a 60-point average — is shared with many KCCI-run qualifications, but the 70-point practical bar is distinctive and sits well above the usual 60-point line. Written subjects carry 20 questions at 5 points each, so individual items weigh heavily, and the Level 1 practical runs 45 minutes per paper for 90 minutes in total. Exams are held year-round under the walk-in system, and a written pass remains effective for two years from its announcement date.

Tips

  • ✔An average above 60 does not save you if one subject lands at 39. Clearing 40 in every subject comes before pushing your strongest subject higher.
  • ✔Each written question is worth 5 points, so a single item swings your subject score by 5. At Level 1, 36 correct out of 60 gives exactly the 60-point average.
  • ✔On the Level 1 practical, 95 in Excel and 65 in Access averages 80 but still fails. Both papers must clear 70 on their own.
  • ✔A written pass stays valid for two years from the results announcement date, and you may retake the practical as many times as you like within that window.
  • ✔Sittings run year-round under the walk-in (sangsi) system, so it is usually most efficient to close only your point gap and re-enter at the next available date.

FAQ

Q. Why did I fail with an average above 60?

The written exam enforces the per-subject floor and the average together. At Level 1, scores of 85 in Computer General, 70 in Spreadsheet General and 35 in Database General total 190 for a 63.3 average, which clears the average rule — but Database General is below 40, so the result is a floor failure.

Q. Does the Level 1 practical pass on a 70-point average?

No. Spreadsheet Practice and Database Practice are each judged against 70 points individually, not averaged. If one paper scores 69, you fail even with 100 on the other.

Q. How do Level 1 and Level 2 differ?

The Level 1 written exam covers three subjects — Computer General, Spreadsheet General and Database General — across 60 questions in 60 minutes, while Level 2 covers two subjects across 40 questions in 40 minutes. The Level 1 practical has two papers of 45 minutes each; Level 2 has a single 40-minute Spreadsheet paper. The numeric pass thresholds are identical for both levels.

Q. How long does a written pass last?

Two years from the date results are announced. During that window the written stage is waived and you can sit the practical without a retake limit. You can confirm your exact expiry date in the My Page records section of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry licensing site.
