Overview

The Attendance Rate Calculator takes the total number of classes in a term and the number you have missed, then shows your attendance rate and how many more absences you can afford before failing. Korean universities commonly assign an F regardless of exam scores when absences exceed one third of all classes (attendance below 2/3), and elementary through high schools require attendance on at least 2/3 of school days for promotion and graduation. Check your remaining margin before scheduling hospital visits, interviews, or trips during the term.

Formula

Attendance rate (%) = classes attended ÷ total classes × 100

Maximum allowed absences = floor(total classes × (1 − required rate))
Remaining allowed absences = maximum allowed absences − current absences

Example: 15 classes, 2/3 rule (≈66.7%)
→ maximum absences = floor(15 × 1/3) = 5
→ with 2 absences so far, you can miss 3 more

How to Use

  1. 1Enter the total number of classes in the term — a once-a-week course over 15 weeks is 15 classes, twice a week is 30.
  2. 2Enter how many classes you have missed so far, converting tardies if your syllabus counts them (e.g. 3 tardies = 1 absence).
  3. 3Select the required attendance rate from your school regulations or syllabus (2/3, 3/4, 4/5, or 9/10).
  4. 4Your attendance rate, maximum allowed absences, and remaining allowed absences are calculated automatically.

Tips

  • The most common university F rule in Korea is missing more than one third of classes, but many courses require 3/4 attendance instead — always check the syllabus for each course.
  • Watch tardy-conversion rules: if 3 tardies count as 1 absence, accumulated lateness alone can push you over the limit.
  • Excused absences (official events, illness with documentation) are often counted as attendance — confirm the policy and submit documents before or right after missing class.
  • When your remaining allowance approaches zero, you must attend every remaining class — keep a buffer for exam season or job interviews.

FAQ

Q. How many absences lead to an F at Korean universities?

Most universities fail a student who misses more than one third of class meetings, regardless of grades. For a 15-class course that means 5 absences are allowed and the 6th triggers an F. The rule is set by each university and even each syllabus — some courses require 3/4 attendance (only 3 absences out of 15) — so always verify your own course policy.

Q. What is the attendance requirement for K-12 schools in Korea?

Under the Enforcement Decree of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, students must attend at least 2/3 of school days to complete the grade. With 190 school days, that means attending at least 127 days; missing more than 63 days can mean repeating the grade. Recognized absences (illness with documentation, family events) are handled separately.

Q. Do tardies and early departures count as absences?

It depends on the course or school policy. University courses often convert tardies at a fixed rate, such as 3 tardies equaling 1 absence, or count missing a set portion of class time as an absence. Add the converted figure to your absence count in this calculator for an accurate remaining margin.

Q. Should excused absences be included in the absence count?

Excused absences that have been approved with documentation (school events, reserve-forces training, family occasions, illness) are usually treated as attendance or excluded from the count. Enter only unexcused or still-uncertain absences to reflect your real standing.
