Enhanced ACT

Overview
Enter your ACT section scores and this calculator returns your Composite using ACT's official rounding rule. The Enhanced ACT, introduced for online testing in April 2025 and paper testing in September 2025, made Science optional and redefined the Composite as the average of English, Math and Reading; this tool supports both the Enhanced format and the legacy four-section format. If you sat Science, it also reports your STEM score (the average of Math and Science). Enter a target Composite and it works backwards to the section-score total you need, how many points you are short, and what each individual section would have to reach on its own.
Formula
Enhanced ACT (April 2025 onward): Composite = round((English + Math + Reading) / 3) Legacy ACT (before April 2025): Composite = round((English + Math + Reading + Science) / 4) STEM = round((Math + Science) / 2) ACT rounds fractions of one-half or more up and fractions below one-half down. Every section score and the Composite use the 1-36 scale. Target reverse calculation: with n sections and a target Composite of T, the required section-score total is ceil(n × T − n / 2). For a target of 32 on the Enhanced ACT that is ceil(96 − 1.5) = 95 points.
How to Use
- 1Pick the test version: 'Enhanced ACT' if you tested in or after April 2025, otherwise the legacy four-section format.
- 2On the Enhanced ACT, say whether you sat the optional Science section — if you did, a STEM score is added.
- 3Enter your English, Math and Reading scores (plus Science on the legacy format) on the 1-36 scale.
- 4Enter a target Composite to see the total you need, the points you are short, and the per-section reverse calculation.
Examples
Enhanced ACT with the optional Science section
English 28, Math 31 and Reading 26 total 85, and 85 divided by 3 is 28.33, so the Composite is 28. The Science score of 27 stays out of the Composite and feeds only the STEM score: (31 + 27) / 2 = 29.
Skipping Science and landing a high Composite
English 33, Math 29 and Reading 34 total 96, which divides evenly into 32.00, so the Composite is 32. With no Science section there is no STEM score.
Legacy four-section ACT landing exactly on .5
English 24, Math 22, Reading 27 and Science 25 total 98, and 98 divided by 4 is exactly 24.5. Because ACT rounds one-half or more up, the Composite is 25 rather than 24.
A weak Science score that the Enhanced format forgives
A student with English 30, Math 28, Reading 29 and Science 20 scores (30 + 28 + 29) / 3 = 29.00 on the Enhanced ACT, a Composite of 29. The same four scores under the legacy rule give 107 / 4 = 26.75, which rounds to just 27.
Background
The ACT is a US college admissions test whose section scores and Composite all run on a 1-36 scale. The Enhanced ACT, which took effect for online testing in April 2025 and paper testing that September, made both Science and Writing optional and changed the Composite from a four-section average to the average of English, Math and Reading. ACT's own Understanding Your Scores guidance states the rounding rule explicitly: fractions less than one-half are rounded down and fractions one-half or more are rounded up. Students who sit Science receive a separate Science score plus a STEM score (the average of Math and Science); students who sit Writing receive a Writing score on a 2-12 scale plus an ELA score. Because ELA converts that 2-12 Writing score through an internal ACT table that is not published, it cannot be reproduced from public formulas and is deliberately left out of this calculator.
Tips
- ✔Score reports from before and after April 2025 average a different number of sections, so set the test version separately for each sitting when you compare them.
- ✔If your Science score trails your other sections, the Enhanced Composite will read higher; if Science is a strength, highlight the STEM score separately instead.
- ✔When you are within three points of the required total, one section is often enough. Look for the lowest 'points needed' entry in the reverse calculation that is not already marked as sufficient.
- ✔Some engineering and science programmes read the STEM score while humanities programmes look at English and Reading, so check what your target schools actually require.
- ✔If a college superscores, gather your best section score from each sitting and run those numbers through the calculator again.
FAQ
Q. Does Science count toward the Composite on the Enhanced ACT?
No. From April 2025 the Enhanced ACT Composite is the average of English, Math and Reading only. Sitting Science gets you a separate Science score and a STEM score (the average of Math and Science), but neither changes the Composite.
Q. If the average lands exactly on .5, does it round up or down?
Up. ACT's rule is that fractions below one-half round down and fractions of one-half or more round up, so a four-section average of 24.5 becomes a Composite of 25. Note that a three-section average can only end in .00, .33 or .67, so .5 never arises on the Enhanced format.
Q. Why doesn't this calculator produce an ELA score?
ELA is described as the average of English, Reading and Writing, but Writing is reported on a 2-12 scale while ELA uses the 1-36 scale, so ACT applies an internal conversion table. That table is not public, and guessing at it would produce numbers that disagree with your real score report.
Q. How do I work out the scores I need for a target Composite?
For n sections and a target T, the required section-score total is ceil(n × T − n / 2). A target of 32 on the Enhanced ACT needs ceil(96 − 1.5) = 95 points, so a current total of 85 leaves you 10 points to find.
