Overview

The Mean/Median/Mode Calculator computes the central tendency measures of a data set. It calculates the arithmetic mean, median, and mode together to provide a comprehensive understanding of the data's characteristics.

Formula

Arithmetic Mean: x̄ = (x₁ + x₂ + ... + xₙ) / n = Σxᵢ / n

Median:
Sort data in ascending order, then:
If n is odd: middle value = x₍(n+1)/2₎
  If n is even: average of two middle values = (x₍n/2₎ + x₍n/2+1₎) / 2

Mode: The most frequently occurring value (can be multiple or none)

How to Use

  1. 1Enter data values separated by commas or spaces.
  2. 2The arithmetic mean, median, and mode are all calculated at once.
  3. 3The range (max - min) and data count are also displayed.

Tips

  • When outliers are present, the median is more representative than the mean.
  • There can be no mode (all values appear once) or multiple modes.
  • For a normal distribution, mean ≈ median ≈ mode.

FAQ

Q. Which should I use — mean, median, or mode?

Use the median when there are many outliers, the mode for categorical data, and the mean for symmetric distributions with few outliers. For skewed data like income, the median provides a more realistic representative value.

Q. Why are average income and median income different?

A few high earners pull the average up significantly. For example, if 9 of 10 people earn $30,000 and one earns $10 million, the average is about $1.03 million but the median is $30,000.

Q. What is a weighted mean?

A mean where each data point has an assigned weight (importance). Weighted mean = Σ(wᵢ × xᵢ) / Σwᵢ. It is used in GPA calculations (grade × credit hours) and price index computations.
