Overview

Determine the minimum score you need on your remaining exams to reach your target grade. Enter your current scores and weights, and the calculator will back-calculate the score required on upcoming assessments.

Formula

Score Needed = (Target Grade - Sum(existing score x weight)) / remaining exam weight. Example: Target 90, Midterm(30%) 80 → Final(40%) needed = (90 - 24) / 0.4 = 165 (shows warning if impossible)

How to Use

  1. 1Enter your target final grade (e.g., 90 points or A grade).
  2. 2Enter the scores and weights for completed components.
  3. 3Enter the weight of the remaining exam or assignment.
  4. 4Click 'Calculate' to see the minimum score needed.

Tips

  • Set your target slightly higher to give yourself a safety margin.
  • If the required score exceeds 100, consider adjusting your target.
  • Simulate multiple scenarios to set a realistic goal.
  • Account for extra credit opportunities if available.

FAQ

Q. What if the required score is above 100?

This means you cannot reach your target grade with the remaining assessments alone. Consider lowering your target or asking your professor about extra credit opportunities.

Q. Can I use this for curved (relative) grading?

Yes, but keep in mind that relative grading depends on class rankings rather than absolute scores. Use historical grade cutoffs as a reference when setting your target.

Q. Can I calculate target scores for multiple courses at once?

This calculator is designed for one course at a time since each course has different weighting structures. Calculate each course separately for accuracy.
