Overview

Convert torque between newton-metres (N·m), kilogram-force metres (kgf·m), kgf·cm, pound-force feet (lbf·ft), pound-force inches (lbf·in), and ounce-force inches (ozf·in). Useful for wheel-bolt tightening specs, engine torque figures, and reading torque wrenches scaled in a different unit. Enter a wrench arm length to also see the force (N and kgf) needed to produce that torque.

Formula

Torque T = force F × perpendicular distance r

1 N·m = 0.1019716 kgf·m = 10.197162 kgf·cm
1 N·m = 0.7375621 lbf·ft = 8.8507458 lbf·in = 141.61193 ozf·in
1 kgf·m = 9.80665 N·m (1 kgf = 9.80665 N)
1 lbf·ft = 1.3558179 N·m = 12 lbf·in
1 lbf·in = 0.1129848 N·m = 16 ozf·in
1 N·m = 100 N·cm, 1 kN·m = 1,000 N·m

How to Use

  1. 1Enter the torque value (e.g. 110).
  2. 2Choose the input unit (N·m, kgf·m, lbf·ft, ...).
  3. 3Or pick a preset (wheel bolt, spark plug, bike stem) to fill a common tightening spec.
  4. 4Read the value converted into every torque unit.
  5. 5Enter a wrench arm length (cm) to see the force in N and kgf required.

Examples

Wheel bolt spec of 110 N·m

Setting a kgf·m-scaled torque wrench to the 110 N·m wheel-bolt spec in the owner's manual.

Torque110
UnitN·m
Wrench arm30cm
Result110 N·m = 11.2169 kgf·m = 1,121.69 kgf·cm = 81.1318 lbf·ft = 973.58 lbf·in. Pulling a 30cm wrench at right angles requires 366.7 N (37.39 kgf).

Engine peak torque of 20.0 kgf·m

Comparing a Korean spec sheet quoted in kgf·m with imported figures in N·m and lbf·ft.

Torque20
Unitkgf·m
Result20 kgf·m = 196.133 N·m = 144.66 lbf·ft = 1,735.9 lbf·in — the same engine as one listed at 196 N·m.

Carbon bike stem bolt at 5 N·m

Low-torque parts such as carbon bars and stems set with a kgf·cm or lbf·in torque driver.

Torque5
UnitN·m
Wrench arm15cm
Result5 N·m = 50.99 kgf·cm = 0.5099 kgf·m = 44.25 lbf·in = 3.6878 lbf·ft. With a 15cm tool only 33.3 N (3.40 kgf) is needed, so hand force overshoots easily.

Background

Torque is force multiplied by the perpendicular distance to the axis of rotation; its SI derived unit is the newton-metre. The gravitational unit kgf·m is still standard on Korean spec sheets and in workshops: 1 kgf is defined from the CGPM standard gravity of 9.80665 m/s², so 1 kgf·m = 9.80665 N·m exactly. In the yard-pound system the 1959 international agreement (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 ft = 0.3048 m) gives 1 lbf·ft = 1.3558179483 N·m, with lbf·in (1/12 lbf·ft) and ozf·in (1/16 lbf·in) used for small fasteners. Torque shares its dimensions with the joule but is physically different, so it is always written as N·m and never as J.

Tips

  • ✔Multiply a kgf·m figure by about 9.81 for N·m, or by about 7.23 for lbf·ft.
  • ✔lbf·ft and lbf·in differ by a factor of 12 — confuse them and you over- or under-tighten twelvefold.
  • ✔Tighten wheel bolts in a star pattern over two or three passes, finishing at the specified torque.
  • ✔Gripping a torque wrench in the middle instead of at the end applies less torque than the dial shows.
  • ✔Aluminium heads and carbon parts strip or crack before the bolt does — always use a torque wrench.

FAQ

Q. How do I convert N·m to kgf·m?

1 kgf·m = 9.80665 N·m. Multiply kgf·m by 9.80665 for N·m, or N·m by 0.1019716 for kgf·m. For example, 110 N·m equals 11.2169 kgf·m.

Q. What is the difference between torque and force?

Force (N) is how hard you push or pull; torque (N·m) is that force times the lever arm, i.e. its turning effect. A longer wrench produces more torque from the same force, so it needs less force to reach a given spec.

Q. Are lb-ft and lb-in the same unit?

No. 1 lbf·ft = 12 lbf·in. Imported tools and manuals use lbf·ft for large fasteners and lbf·in for small screws, so misreading the scale gives a 12× error.

Q. Why do torque (N·m) and energy (J) look like the same unit?

Both are force times distance dimensionally, but energy involves motion along the force while torque involves a lever arm perpendicular to it. Because the physical meaning differs, torque is written as N·m rather than J.
