Overview

Convert between bytes (B), kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), terabytes (TB), and more. Supports both binary (1024-based) and decimal (1000-based) conversions.

Formula

Binary (IEC):
1 KiB = 1024 B
1 MiB = 1024 KiB = 1,048,576 B
1 GiB = 1024 MiB = 1,073,741,824 B
1 TiB = 1024 GiB

Decimal (SI):
1 KB = 1000 B
1 MB = 1000 KB = 1,000,000 B
1 GB = 1000 MB = 1,000,000,000 B
1 TB = 1000 GB

How to Use

  1. 1Enter the data size value to convert.
  2. 2Select the source unit (B, KB, MB, GB, TB).
  3. 3Select the target unit.
  4. 4Choose binary (1024) or decimal (1000) base.
  5. 5View the converted result.

Tips

  • Hard drive manufacturers use decimal (1000-based) units, which is why OS-reported capacity appears smaller.
  • Network speeds use bits (bit), while file sizes use bytes (Byte). 1 Byte = 8 bits.
  • An internet speed of 100 Mbps translates to roughly 12.5 MB/s download speed.
  • Always check whether binary or decimal units are being used when comparing cloud storage plans.

FAQ

Q. What is the difference between KB and KiB?

KB (kilobyte) is 1000 bytes (decimal), while KiB (kibibyte) is 1024 bytes (binary). The IEC standard introduced binary prefixes (Ki, Mi, Gi) to eliminate this ambiguity.

Q. Why does a 1 TB hard drive show as about 930 GB?

Manufacturers define 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (decimal), but operating systems calculate 1 GB as 1,073,741,824 bytes (binary), so it displays as approximately 930 GiB.

Q. Why is my download speed slower than my internet speed?

Internet speed is measured in bits per second (e.g., 100 Mbps), while download speed is shown in bytes per second (e.g., MB/s). Since 1 byte = 8 bits, 100 Mbps / 8 = ~12.5 MB/s.
