Overview

The Fraction Calculator performs addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and simplification of fractions. It also supports conversion between mixed numbers and improper fractions, and between decimals and fractions.

Formula

Addition: a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) / bd

Subtraction: a/b - c/d = (ad - bc) / bd

Multiplication: a/b × c/d = ac / bd

Division: a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c = ad / bc

Simplification: Divide numerator and denominator by their GCD.

How to Use

  1. 1Enter the numerator and denominator of the first fraction.
  2. 2Select the operator (+, -, ×, ÷).
  3. 3Enter the numerator and denominator of the second fraction.
  4. 4The result is displayed as a simplified (reduced) fraction.

Tips

  • For addition and subtraction, you must find a common denominator first.
  • Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal.
  • Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions before calculating to avoid mistakes.

FAQ

Q. What is a reduced (simplified) fraction?

A fraction whose numerator and denominator share no common factor other than 1. For example, 6/8 is not reduced, but 3/4 is.

Q. What is the difference between a mixed number and an improper fraction?

A mixed number is an integer plus a proper fraction (e.g., 2 3/4). An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to the denominator (e.g., 11/4). They are interconvertible: 2 3/4 = 11/4.

Q. How do you convert a decimal to a fraction?

For terminating decimals, use a power of 10 as the denominator: 0.75 = 75/100 = 3/4. For repeating decimals, set up an equation: 0.333... = 1/3.
