Overview

Calculate safe storage durations for expressed breast milk based on storage method (room temperature, refrigerator, freezer). Following CDC and medical guidelines, enter the expression date and time to get the expiration time. Strict adherence to storage guidelines is essential for your baby's health.

Formula

Breast milk storage duration (for healthy full-term infants):
- Room temperature (≤25°C / 77°F): up to 4 hours
- Insulated cooler with ice packs: up to 24 hours
- Refrigerator (4°C / 39°F): up to 4 days (use within 72 hours recommended)
- Freezer (≤-18°C / 0°F): up to 6 months optimal (acceptable up to 12 months)

Expiration time = Expression time + Maximum storage duration for the method

How to Use

  1. 1Enter the date and time of expression.
  2. 2Select the storage method (room temperature / refrigerator / freezer).
  3. 3Click the 'Calculate' button.
  4. 4The expiration date/time and remaining time are displayed.

Tips

  • Always label containers with the date, time, and volume of expressed milk.
  • Store milk in the back of the refrigerator (where temperature is most consistent), not in the door.
  • Never refreeze thawed breast milk.
  • Use thawed milk within 24 hours if refrigerated, or within 2 hours at room temperature.
  • Color or smell changes can be normal, but discard milk that smells sour.

FAQ

Q. How do I thaw frozen breast milk?

The safest method is to thaw slowly in the refrigerator (about 12 hours). If needed quickly, hold the container under lukewarm running water. Never use a microwave, as it can destroy nutrients and create dangerous hot spots.

Q. What should I do with leftover milk from a feeding?

Milk that the baby has started drinking can contain bacteria from the baby's mouth. Use it within 2 hours of starting the feeding, or discard it. It's best to portion only the needed amount before warming.

Q. Is breast milk still safe after 4 hours at room temperature?

According to CDC guidelines, breast milk left at room temperature (≤25°C / 77°F) for more than 4 hours carries a risk of bacterial growth and should be discarded. In hot weather, use or refrigerate it even sooner.
