Overview
Convert between units used in digital design and print, including px, rem, em, and pt. Useful for accurate size conversion in web/app development and print design.
Formula
Conversion formulas: px to pt: pt = px × 72 / 96 (= px × 0.75, at 96 dpi). pt to px: px = pt × 96 / 72 (= pt × 1.333). px to rem: rem = px / base font size (16px). rem to px: px = rem × base font size. px to em: em = px / parent font size. px to inches: in = px / DPI. px to cm: cm = px / DPI × 2.54. Note: 1 inch = 72pt = 96px (screen standard).
How to Use
- 1Select the source unit and target unit.
- 2Set the base font size (for rem/em conversions).
- 3Enter the value.
- 4Review and copy the conversion result.
Tips
- ✔In web standards, 1px is not a physical pixel but a CSS reference pixel (approximately 0.26mm at 96 dpi).
- ✔In print, pt (point) is the standard unit, and body text typically uses 10–12pt.
- ✔On Retina/high-resolution displays, 1 CSS px maps to multiple physical pixels (device pixel ratio).
- ✔Be aware of unit differences between design tools (Figma, Sketch) and CSS.
FAQ
Q. What is the difference between px and pt?
px (pixel) is a screen-based unit using 96 dpi as the CSS standard. pt (point) is a print-based unit where 1pt = 1/72 inch. On screen, 1px ≈ 0.75pt. For print design, using pt is more accurate.
Q. What is device pixel ratio (DPR)?
DPR is the number of physical pixels corresponding to 1 CSS pixel. Standard displays have DPR=1, while Retina displays have DPR=2 (or 3). If images look blurry on high-resolution displays, you need to provide images that are DPR times larger.
Q. How should I set the resolution for print design?
Print typically uses 300 dpi (dots per inch). Since 1 inch = 300 dots, a 4×6 inch print requires a 1200×1800 pixel image. Web images at 72–96 dpi will appear low-quality when printed.
