Overview

This apparent temperature calculator shows how hot or cold the air actually feels, using the official formulas of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). For summer (May–September) it applies the wet-bulb-based formula adopted on 2 June 2022; for winter (October–April) it applies the wind chill formula. Along with the number, it classifies the result against Korea's four heat-impact stages (31℃ watch, 33℃ caution, 35℃ warning, 38℃ danger) and the cold-impact apparent-temperature bands. Planning outdoor work, sports, or a commute around apparent temperature rather than air temperature is a far better guard against heat illness and hypothermia.

Formula

[Summer apparent temperature] (KMA, revised 2 June 2022)
AT = −0.2442 + 0.55399×Tw + 0.45535×Ta − 0.0022×Tw² + 0.00278×Tw×Ta + 3.0

Wet-bulb temperature Tw (Stull approximation)
Tw = Ta×atan[0.151977×(RH+8.313659)^0.5] + atan(Ta+RH) − atan(RH−1.676331) + 0.00391838×RH^1.5×atan(0.023101×RH) − 4.686035

[Winter apparent temperature] (wind chill index)
AT = 13.12 + 0.6215×Ta − 11.37×V^0.16 + 0.3965×Ta×V^0.16

Ta = air temperature (℃), RH = relative humidity (%), V = wind speed (km/h); atan returns radians.
The winter formula applies only when Ta ≤ 10℃ and wind speed ≥ 1.3 m/s.

How to Use

  1. 1Pick the mode that matches the season: summer (humidity-based) for May–September, winter (wind-based) for October–April.
  2. 2Enter the air temperature in ℃, straight from your forecast or weather app.
  3. 3Enter relative humidity (%) in summer mode, or wind speed in winter mode. Wind speed can be entered in m/s or km/h.
  4. 4Read the apparent temperature and how far it sits above or below the air temperature; the wet-bulb temperature (summer) or converted wind speed (winter) is shown too.
  5. 5Check which heat- or cold-impact stage you are in and how many degrees remain to the next stage, then plan breaks or extra layers accordingly.

Examples

Humid midsummer day — 33℃, 70% humidity

A typical end-of-monsoon day in Korea. The wet-bulb temperature climbs to 28.39℃, pushing the apparent temperature 1.3℃ above the air temperature.

ModeSummer (humidity)
Temperature33℃
Relative humidity70%
ResultWet bulb 28.39℃ → apparent temperature 34.3℃, in the 'caution' stage (above the 33℃ heat advisory threshold), 0.7℃ short of the 35℃ warning stage.

Lower temperature, very humid — 31℃, 85% humidity

At 31℃ the air temperature alone is below the heat advisory threshold, but at 85% humidity sweat barely evaporates and the apparent temperature passes 33℃ — a clear demonstration of how much humidity matters.

ModeSummer (humidity)
Temperature31℃
Relative humidity85%
ResultWet bulb 28.85℃ → apparent temperature 33.5℃, 'caution' stage, a full 2.5℃ above the air temperature.

Windy winter day — −5℃, 5 m/s wind

A wind speed of 5 m/s equals 18 km/h. The air is −5℃, but the wind strips heat from exposed skin and the apparent temperature drops past −11℃.

ModeWinter (wind)
Temperature−5℃
Wind speed5 m/s (18 km/h)
ResultApparent temperature −11.2℃, in the cold-impact 'warning' band (−15.4℃ to −10.5℃), 6.2℃ below the air temperature.

Freezing point with strong wind — 0℃, 10 m/s wind

Even at 0℃, a 10 m/s (36 km/h) wind brings the apparent temperature down to about −7℃. This combination matters most on ridgelines and exposed coastlines.

ModeWinter (wind)
Temperature0℃
Wind speed10 m/s (36 km/h)
ResultApparent temperature −7.1℃, in the cold-impact 'caution' band (−10.5℃ to −3.2℃) — wind alone accounts for a 7.1℃ drop.

Background

On 2 June 2022 the Korea Meteorological Administration replaced its summer apparent-temperature formula with one built on wet-bulb temperature, so that humidity is weighted more realistically. The wet bulb itself comes from the approximation Roland Stull published in the Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology in 2011, valid for −20℃ ≤ Ta ≤ 50℃ and 5% ≤ RH ≤ 99%. The winter figure uses the standard North American wind chill index with 10-minute mean wind speed in km/h. Since 2020, Korean heat advisories have been issued on daily maximum apparent temperature rather than air temperature: an advisory at 33℃ and a warning at 35℃ when the level is expected to persist for two days or more. Korea's occupational heat-illness rules use the same scale, with required measures at 31℃, 33℃, 35℃ and 38℃.

Tips

  • ✔At the same 33℃, 40% humidity feels like about 32℃ while 85% humidity feels close to 36℃. In summer, check humidity before temperature.
  • ✔Korean forecasts give wind speed in m/s but the formula needs km/h, so multiply by 3.6. This calculator converts automatically once you pick a unit.
  • ✔Apparent temperature assumes shade on flat ground. Direct sun, asphalt, and construction sites feel considerably hotter than the computed value.
  • ✔From the 33℃ 'caution' stage, the rule of thumb is at least 20 minutes of shaded rest every two hours; from 35℃ 'warning', outdoor work stops between 14:00 and 17:00.
  • ✔The winter formula is only valid at 10℃ or below with wind of at least 1.3 m/s — outside that range the KMA does not publish an apparent temperature either.

FAQ

Q. How is apparent temperature different from air temperature?

Air temperature is what a thermometer measures; apparent temperature is an index of how the same air actually feels once humidity or wind is taken into account. In summer, higher humidity blocks sweat from evaporating and raises the felt temperature; in winter, stronger wind strips heat from the skin and lowers it. At 33℃ with 70% humidity the apparent temperature is 34.3℃; at −5℃ with 5 m/s wind it is −11.2℃.

Q. At what apparent temperature are Korean heat advisories issued?

A heat advisory is issued when the daily maximum apparent temperature is expected to reach 33℃ or above for two days or more, and a heat warning at 35℃ or above under the same two-day condition. The threshold switched from air temperature to humidity-adjusted apparent temperature in 2020. A single reading above 33℃ does not by itself trigger an advisory — the persistence condition has to be met as well.

Q. Why does the winter calculation stop when the wind is light?

The wind chill formula models heat carried away from the skin by moving air, so with almost no wind it loses its physical basis. The KMA computes a winter apparent temperature only when the air temperature is 10℃ or below and the wind is at least 1.3 m/s. Outside that range this calculator reports the air temperature unchanged instead of applying the formula.

Q. Are cold-wave advisories also based on apparent temperature?

No. Cold-wave advisories use the morning minimum air temperature. An advisory is issued when the morning low drops 10℃ or more from the previous day to 3℃ or below and is 3℃ below normal, or when it stays at −12℃ or below for two days or more; the warning thresholds are a 15℃ drop and −15℃. The winter stages in this calculator come from the cold-impact forecast's apparent-temperature bands, not from the advisory criteria.

Q. What is wet-bulb temperature and why does it drive the formula?

Wet-bulb temperature is what a thermometer wrapped in a wet cloth reads: evaporating water carries heat away, so it reads lower than the air temperature. The more humid the air, the less evaporation happens and the closer the wet bulb sits to the air temperature — which is exactly the condition in which sweating stops cooling you. That is why the KMA made it the central variable in 2022. At 33℃ and 70% humidity the wet bulb is 28.39℃.
