Overview

This calculator estimates tolls on Korean expressways run by the Korea Expressway Corporation using the published tariff: a fixed base fare plus a per-kilometre running charge that depends on the vehicle class. It handles both closed (entry and exit toll gates) and open (single gate) systems, applies the 50% discount for two-lane sections and the 20% surcharge for sections with six lanes or more, and subtracts the discount you qualify for — 50% for light cars, 30% for EVs in 2026, 20-50% for commuter hours, 10-20% for multi-child households.

Formula

Closed system toll = 900 KRW base fare + distance (km) × the per-km running charge for your class. Open system toll = 720 KRW base fare + the shortest chargeable distance for that gate × the same running charge. Per-km charges are 44.3 KRW for class 1, 45.2 for class 2, 47.0 for class 3, 62.9 for class 4 and 74.4 for class 5. Two-lane sections halve the running charge and sections with six or more lanes add 20%. The discount is applied and the result is rounded to the nearest 100 KRW. A class 1 car driving 100 km pays 900 + 100 × 44.3 = 5,330 KRW, rounded to 5,300 KRW.

How to Use

  1. 1Pick the tariff system: closed (900 KRW base fare) for ordinary expressways with gates at both ends, open (720 KRW) for urban expressways with a single gate.
  2. 2Pick the vehicle class. Passenger cars, vans up to 16 seats and trucks under 2.5 tonnes are class 1; three-axle vehicles are class 4 and four or more axles class 5.
  3. 3Enter the distance in kilometres — for the open system, the shortest chargeable distance assigned to that gate.
  4. 4Choose the number of lanes on the section: four lanes is the baseline, two lanes halve the running charge, six or more lanes add 20%.
  5. 5Choose your discount. Light car, EV, commuter, multi-child and disability discounts never stack — only the largest one applies.
  6. 6Select one-way or return to see the final toll rounded to 100 KRW alongside the base fare, running charge and discount breakdown.

Examples

Passenger car, 100 km on a closed-system expressway

The textbook case: class 1 car, standard four-lane section, no discount.

SystemClosed (900 KRW base fare)
Vehicle classClass 1 passenger car (44.3 KRW/km)
Distance100 km
LanesFour lanes
DiscountNone
Result900 + 100 × 44.3 = 5,330 KRW, rounded to 5,300 KRW one way and 10,600 KRW for the return trip.

Electric car, 220 km with the 2026 EV discount

EVs registered on a Hi-Pass transponder get 30% off in 2026, down from 50% in 2024.

SystemClosed (900 KRW base fare)
Vehicle classClass 1 (44.3 KRW/km)
Distance220 km
DiscountEV / hydrogen 30%
DirectionOne way
Result900 + 220 × 44.3 = 10,646 KRW, less 30% = 7,452 KRW, rounded to 7,500 KRW — a saving of 3,100 KRW against the 10,600 KRW undiscounted fare.

Class 2 medium truck, 40 km

A two-axle truck wider than 279.4 mm at the tyre falls into class 2 at 45.2 KRW per kilometre.

SystemClosed (900 KRW base fare)
Vehicle classClass 2 medium truck (45.2 KRW/km)
Distance40 km
LanesFour lanes
DiscountNone
Result900 + 40 × 45.2 = 2,708 KRW, rounded to 2,700 KRW one way.

Background

Korean expressway tolls are set under the Toll Road Act so that users share construction and maintenance costs. Gate operating costs do not scale with distance, so they are billed separately as a base fare — 900 KRW on the closed system, 720 KRW on the open system — while the rest is charged per kilometre. Classes are defined by axle count and tyre geometry rather than by weight: a two-axle vehicle moves from class 1 to class 2 once tyre width exceeds 279.4 mm and to class 3 once track width exceeds 1,800 mm, while three axles make class 4 and four or more class 5. Lane count adjusts the running charge to reflect construction cost, and the EV discount is being phased out from 50% in 2024 to 40% in 2025, 30% in 2026 and 20% in 2027 before ending. Multi-child discounts began on 28 July 2026 for three or more children and 22 August 2026 for two, and apply only at weekends and public holidays.

Tips

  • ✔The commuter discount only applies on weekdays when the entry and exit gates are less than 20 km apart, so one extra junction can wipe it out entirely.
  • ✔Discounts never stack. If you drive a light car during commuter hours you get the 50% light-car rate, not 70%.
  • ✔Light-car, EV, multi-child and commuter discounts require payment through Hi-Pass or another electronic method — a cash lane means the full fare.
  • ✔Privately financed expressways such as the Incheon Bridge set their own tariffs and can cost two to three times the figure shown here.
  • ✔Tolls are sometimes waived nationwide during the Seollal and Chuseok holidays, so check announcements before a long trip.
  • ✔Real routes mix two-, four- and six-lane sections, so treat this as an estimate and confirm the exact fare on ex.co.kr.

FAQ

Q. How is an expressway toll calculated in Korea?

On the closed system you add a 900 KRW base fare to distance multiplied by the per-km charge for your class. At 44.3 KRW/km for a class 1 car, 100 km costs 900 + 4,430 = 5,330 KRW, rounded to 5,300 KRW. The open system uses a 720 KRW base fare and the gate's shortest chargeable distance.

Q. How are vehicle classes decided?

By axles and tyre geometry, not weight. Two axles with tyres up to 279.4 mm wide is class 1, wider tyres make it class 2, a track over 1,800 mm makes it class 3, three axles class 4 and four or more class 5, charged at 44.3, 45.2, 47.0, 62.9 and 74.4 KRW per kilometre.

Q. What is the EV toll discount in 2026?

30%. It was 50% through 2024, fell to 40% in 2025 and 30% in 2026, drops to 20% in 2027 and is scheduled to end at the close of that year. The vehicle must be registered as electric or hydrogen on the Hi-Pass transponder and pass through a Hi-Pass lane.

Q. Can I combine the light-car and commuter discounts?

No. When several discounts apply, only the highest single rate is used — a light car during commuter hours pays the 50% light-car rate.

Q. Do private expressways charge the same?

No. This calculator covers state-financed expressways managed by the Korea Expressway Corporation. Privately financed routes set their own tariffs and can be two to three times more expensive for the same distance, and the multi-child discount does not apply there.
