Overview
The Fuel Surcharge Calculator computes the YQ (fuel surcharge) charged on airline tickets in addition to the base fare. It supports domestic flights as well as short-haul (Japan/SE Asia) and long-haul (Europe/Americas) international routes, with editable preset amounts for the latest published stage. Use it to compare total ticket prices, plan family travel budgets, and estimate the cash portion required for award tickets.
Formula
Total Fuel Surcharge = Per-person One-way Surcharge × Direction Factor × (Adults + Children). The direction factor is 1 for one-way and 2 for round-trip. Children (ages 2–11) pay the same surcharge as adults, while infants under 2 without a seat are typically exempt. Example: Seoul → Paris round-trip for 2 adults + 1 child at KRW 145,000 one-way → 145,000 × 2 × 3 = KRW 870,000.
How to Use
- 1Select your route (Domestic, Japan, China/SE Asia, Middle East, Oceania, Europe, Americas). A typical preset amount is loaded.
- 2Override the per-person one-way amount with the carrier's currently published stage value — fuel surcharges change monthly.
- 3Choose one-way or round-trip.
- 4Enter the number of adults, children, and infants. Infants without a seat are usually exempt.
- 5Optional: enter the base fare per person to see the combined ticket cost.
Tips
- ✔International fuel surcharge stages are recalculated on the 1st of every month based on the previous month's average MOPS Singapore jet fuel price.
- ✔International routes use stages 1–33; domestic routes use stages 1–5.
- ✔Award tickets still require fuel surcharge and airport taxes to be paid in cash.
- ✔Many low-cost carriers either waive fuel surcharges or bundle them into the base fare — always compare on a total-fare basis.
- ✔If a stage is reduced after you've already ticketed, no refund is issued; consider waiting if a reduction looks likely.
FAQ
Q. Why does the fuel surcharge change every month?
International fuel surcharge stages are set by the previous month's average MOPS Singapore jet fuel price. When fuel prices fall into a different stage band, the surcharge automatically resets on the 1st of the next month.
Q. Is fuel surcharge applied to domestic Korean flights?
Yes. Domestic flights use a 1–5 stage system applied when jet fuel exceeds a threshold (e.g., USD 1.20 per gallon). The per-leg amount typically ranges from KRW 1,100 to KRW 5,500.
Q. Do infants pay fuel surcharge?
Infants under 2 not occupying a seat are usually exempt. Children aged 2–11 occupy a seat and pay the same surcharge as adults.
Q. Are award tickets free of fuel surcharge?
No. Korean Air and Asiana award tickets waive the fare but still require the fuel surcharge and airport fees to be paid in cash.
Q. How is the surcharge calculated for round-trips?
Fuel surcharges are charged per direction, so a round-trip equals one-way surcharge × 2.
Q. What about connecting flights?
Connecting flights on the same carrier are often charged once, but separate-ticket itineraries or 24+ hour stopovers can trigger an additional surcharge. Confirm with your carrier before booking.
