* UTM(Universal Transverse Mercator)은 지구를 60개 존으로 나누어 좌표를 표현하는 체계입니다. 한국은 주로 52N 존에 해당합니다.

Overview

Convert between WGS84 latitude/longitude coordinates and UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) coordinates bidirectionally. UTM is widely used in military, surveying, GIS, and disaster management for meter-based planar coordinates. Korea primarily falls in Zone 52N.

Formula

UTM conversion: Earth is projected onto 60 zones (6° each) using Transverse Mercator projection. Scale factor K₀ = 0.9996, reference ellipsoid WGS84 (semi-major axis 6,378,137 m, flattening 1/298.257). Easting = distance from central meridian + 500,000 m (False Easting). Northing = distance from equator (add 10,000,000 m for Southern Hemisphere).

How to Use

  1. 1Select conversion direction (Lat/Lon to UTM or UTM to Lat/Lon).
  2. 2For Lat/Lon conversion: enter latitude and longitude in decimal degrees.
  3. 3For UTM conversion: enter Zone number, hemisphere (N/S), Easting, and Northing.
  4. 4Results are displayed automatically.

Tips

  • Most of South Korea falls within UTM Zone 52N (longitude 126°–132°E).
  • Western islands like Baengnyeongdo may fall in Zone 51N.
  • UTM is valid only between 80°S and 84°N latitude. Polar regions use the UPS system.
  • Easting values are always positive, centered at 500,000 m from the central meridian.
  • MGRS (Military Grid Reference System) further subdivides UTM coordinates.

FAQ

Q. What is the UTM coordinate system?

UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) divides Earth into 60 zones of 6° longitude each, projecting each zone using Transverse Mercator projection. It uses meter-based planar coordinates (Easting, Northing), making distance calculations intuitive.

Q. What UTM Zone is Korea in?

Most of South Korea is in UTM Zone 52N (longitude 126°–132°E). Some western islands may fall in Zone 51N. The zone number is automatically determined based on longitude.

Q. What is the difference between UTM and Korean TM?

Korea's national coordinate system (EPSG:5186 etc.) uses TM (Transverse Mercator) projection but differs from UTM in origin, scale factor, and false easting/northing values. UTM uses scale factor 0.9996 while Korean TM uses 1.0000, with different central meridians.
