Overview

The Speed Fine Calculator determines Korean traffic fines, penalties, and demerit points based on how much you exceed the speed limit. It covers general roads, highways, and School Zones with their heavier penalties.

Formula

Fine tiers (non-commercial passenger car): up to 20 km/h over → 30,000 KRW, 20–40 km/h over → 60,000 KRW, 40–60 km/h over → 90,000 KRW, 60+ km/h over → 120,000 KRW. Demerit points range from 15 to 60.

How to Use

  1. 1Select the road type (general road, highway, school zone).
  2. 2Enter the posted speed limit (km/h).
  3. 3Enter your actual speed (km/h).
  4. 4Click 'Calculate' to see the fine amount and demerit points.

Tips

  • Fines and demerit points are doubled in school zones (children protection areas).
  • Accumulating 40 or more demerit points triggers a license suspension.
  • Automated camera enforcement results in a penalty (charged to the vehicle owner) without demerit points; officer-issued tickets include demerit points.
  • Paying the penalty early gives a 20% reduction.
  • Use GPS navigation safety alerts to stay aware of speed camera zones.

FAQ

Q. What is the difference between a traffic fine and a penalty surcharge?

A traffic fine (beomchikgeum) is charged to the driver and includes demerit points. A penalty surcharge (gwataeryo) is charged to the vehicle owner without demerit points. Camera enforcement uses the surcharge; officer stops use the fine.

Q. How severe are school zone speeding penalties?

School zone violations carry double the fine and demerit points. If an accident occurs, the 'Min-Sik Act' imposes additional criminal penalties.

Q. When do demerit points expire?

Demerit points expire after one year of no violations or accidents. Completing a special traffic safety course can also reduce accumulated points.
